I can't end this book without some comment about poker and perspective.
When Chris Ferguson (2000 World Series of Poker World Champion) and I were discussing possible quotes for him to contribute to the back of the second edition, we agreed that our favorite was:
Surely you have something better to do with your time than play poker. I suggest a walk outside, volunteering at a homeless shelter, or listening to Bach.
It didn't make the back cover, but it deserved inclusion in this text.
Poker is a wonderful game and a delightful diversion. But it is not a substitute for life, and I see far too many people for whom it is life. Don't let yourself be one of those people.
Care for your family, friends, and neighbors. Get outside as much as possible. Tend to your spiritual needs, whatever they may be. Listen to good music. I commend to you Palestrina, the aforementioned Bach, Jerry Douglas, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, but listen to whatever moves your soul. Read good books. I like mysteries, particularly Sharyn McCrumb and Ellis Peters. Chris Ferguson is a James Clavell fan. Be an informed citizen and use your vote.
Stay well, and thank you for reading our book.
