Tips for Starting a New Life
26 Although, as discussed earlier in the chapter, you need to set limits on how much of your free time you spend doing this, lest you end up with no diversity in your life. To fully incorporate poker into your life, make sure that the people important to you don't feel as if their own happiness is somehow related to your performance at the table. In summary, you really want to keep your poker life and the rest of your life as separate as possible. The trials and problems of everyday life will only hinder you at the poker table, while the emotions and the ups and downs of poker should not be allowed to interfere with the rest of your life. They are two separate worlds, and success at one could easily come at the expense of the other.
If a lot of things are going wrong in your life, it might be wise to withdraw from any form of poker (or gambling) on that particular day. From a karmic standpoint, these sorts of things all seem to work together. A rut in one area of life often seems to overflow into other areas.
Once the initial excitement has worn off, you might realize that being I professional poker player isn't really what you want to do with your life. As a career, it certainly has its positive side, but taking a more long-term view, you may find it less than fulfilling. Think about the future. Is this what you want to be doing five or ten years from now
The Poker Mindset focuses on the best-possible attitudes to take to the poker table for the purpose of maximizing your winnings. However, looking at the broader picture, there is actually a key component that missing. This component is just as important as all the others, if t more so, but also acts as a counterpoint to them. This component ay not (directly) maximize your winnings, but it will maximize the positive impact that poker has on your life. At its roots, poker is a game that should be fun to play. If you no longer enjoy playing or are letting poker affect other areas of your life, then you need to reassess your attitude toward the game. What you really want to maximize in poker is not the money you win, but the positive impact it has on your life as a whole. Of course, winning money is one way that poker can have a positive influence on your life, which is why it is a worthy goal. However, poker might also have a number of negative effects on your life. By mastering the...
Decide on your goals in life and then work toward them. No matter how well you think you are doing, always have an area of your life that you are looking to improve. Climb to the very top of the mountain, and once you get there, start looking to the stars. Seek to improve the other areas of your life the same way you would go about improving your poker game. Too many people neglect the former while concentrating on the latter. Hopefully, the Poker Mindset will help you master your emotions at the poker table to achieve better long-term results. At the same time, remember that poker can be a positive influence on the rest of your life if you just allow yourself to learn what it teaches you.
This is somewhat similar to Rule 92 above. What are your tendencies today How has your day been going Have you been impatient Irritable Distracted Feeling a little down-in-the-dumps Tired Absent-minded Easily angered or annoyed Factor these tendencies that have popped up on this particular day in your life into your poker play. Don't overlook this simple (and easy to overlook) item. Allow a little extra slack in those areas when you sit down to play. (And if they are too much, don't play at all.)
If you are contemplating a change in career, you will naturally want to know how much you can expect to earn. Fortunately, if you know your long-term earn rate and can do some simple math, then your expected take-home pay is easy to calculate. Simply multiply your hourly earn rate by the number of hours you intend to work. You have to be realistic about your working hours. In the long term, you won't want to work 7 days a week, 10 hours a day, for the rest of your life. Whether this is enough money is, of course, entirely subjective and will depend on your expectations and what you could earn elsewhere. One of the main reasons why professional poker might not be a great career choice for most people is that if you are sharp enough to earn good money playing poker, then you are probably clever enough to earn good money in other fields without the uncertainly that professional poker entails. Make sure that you can earn enough money to support your lifestyle and are not taking a big pay...
This is the more practical and, in truth, simpler side of coping with a downswing. The hard part is developing the Poker Mindset necessary to cope with downswings. The easy part is practicing prudent financial planning so that if you do hit a bump in the road, your life won't start to unravel. Ideally, you would like to be in a situation where you can make no money at all for a few months, yet still be able to pay all the bills and live the exact same lifestyle as you do in the good months.
From this feedback we develop this book concept. Then we hunted down the facts. In the end, this has been a lot of fun and quite profitable. We love the game of Texas Hold'em but now we have the tools to win more games. As usual, if you have the insider 'stuff', you are better armed to succeed. Pretty much one of those simple rules to live your life by if you ask me. What's Intel - typical 'military speak' for 'field intelligence' - or relevant knowledge. What you need to know, now. In the covert world of spies and agents, having the right nugget of information available when required can save your life or someone else's. In Poker, it means making the win when others wouldn't and adding a few points to your odds. This is different from lifetime
You want as much reassurance that your credit info is safe, your identity and contact info won't be sold and that game conditions are as safe and as fair as possible (e.g. that the software isn't vulnerable to manipulation players aren't colluding because a system of checks is in place etc.). Secure servers are a necessity. Sites should elaborate on the encryption system that they use.
If your goal is to win the World Series of Poker next year but you've never played a big limit game in your life, don't expect to achieve that simply by virtue of having read this book. Let's get real here. While your authors are terrific teachers (who are now learning to walk on water) they haven't quite mastered it yet.
Learn how to navigate the sites and play the games using play money, as it won't cost you any actual money if you mistakenly fold when you have the best possible hand. Imagine, you're just about to win a big pot in a tournament that will guarantee you'll be in the money, but through some silly mistake you hit the wrong button and fold Another common rookie mistake comes in not knowing how to use the slide bar in games in which a bet may vary in amount. If what you just read looks like English, but you have no idea what the heck it's saying, you should definitely begin on the play money tables. We would never presume to tell you how to go about your business, but do realize that once you become comfortable with the mechanics of play over a short period of time, you'll have the rest of your life to play Don't feel rushed there's always a game. Don't think so Log on at any time of day and see if a game in which you might want to play has a seat available in less than 20 minutes. We can't...
The calling station likes to play along, and follow with everyone else. He does not want to disturb the game and perturb any of his fellow comrades by unnecessarily raising. When the calling station bets, you know he thinks he has a good hand. When the calling station raises, you better run for your life, because he has a monster. The calling station will play many hands, has no problem limping in while in early position, calling a professional player's early position raise, or calling a bet when he has a pair of 8's when there are three overcards on the board. Beware, the calling station could be unintentionally trying to rope-a-dope you. If you play too aggressively into him without a made hand, he will simply call you down with a middle pair or a bottom pair. You do not want to bluff the calling station because he thinks it is a social game like the one in his hometown where everyone plays just about every hand to the River. He is our friend and as our friend, he will not get...
Something on your mind - Distractions can also come from within. You lose focus when you are thinking about other things going on in your life not related to the poker game at hand. This is especially true when you are not actively involved in the hand, as your mind will start to wander. Contempt - Sometimes formulaic tilt is caused by not having sufficient respect for the game you are playing. This might be because you have just
These are the only two poker-related reasons why you should end your session. Of course, you will frequently quit for other reasons completely unrelated to poker, such as being hungry or tired, having to meet someone or be somewhere else, or wanting to watch your favorite TV program. Leaving for any of these reasons is perfectly line we are certainly not here to instruct you on how to prioritize your life. In fact, you should have other things to do with your life besides playing poker.16
All serious poker players try to minimize their tells, obviously. There are a couple of ways to go about this. One is the robotic approach where your face becomes a mask and your voice a monotone, at least while the hand is being played. With some practice, this approach is accessible to most players. The other is the manic method, where you affect a whole bunch of tics, twitches, and expressions, and mix them up with a river of insane babble. The idea is to overwhelm your opponents with clues, so they can't sort out what's really going on. This approach can be effective, but for normal people it's hard to pull off. (If you've spent part of your life in an institution, this method may come naturally.)
